about

Royally Sparked Volume II is a celebration of all the things that make new music in Canada sound great. Wonderful songwriting, great production and undeniable artistry. The compilation features ten artists from across the nation and is a refreshing glimpse at the depth of talent currently being cultivated in this country.

This fourteen song collection was handpicked by Sparks Music's young A&R Director, Diana Medeiros, who listened and researched Canadian recording artists that were garnering attention both at college radio, CBC radio 3 and through various other alternative music outlets. "We had certain goals and criteria in mind and I literally spent months reaching out to artists throughout Canada. The result of which, I'd like to believe, is an entertaining album that takes the listener on a musical, hook laden ride, complete with new surprises and delights at every turn."

The album will be released digitally on June 10th through Universal Music Canada and in the rest of the world via Ingrooves Music Group who are based in the U.S.

About the bands...

Scientists of Sound (Halifax)
Formed in 2009, Scientists of Sound are producers Colin Crowell (keyboards, bass, trumpet) and Craig Mercer (guitar, keys, drums, vocals). Their skill and experience as prolific touring musicians has been instrumental in their rapid rise up the live electro music ladder. They've played some of the country's top electronic/eclectic festivals including Shambhala, Evolve and the Sunseekers Ball plus the East Coast Music Awards. They have shared the stage with A-list electronic artists such as MSTRKRFT, Boys Noize, DJ Falcon, Kid Koala, Thunderheist, and The New Deal.

RLMDL (Toronto)
RLMDL are a dream-pop electronic act based in Toronto. Initially conceived as a solo project for musician/producer Jordan Allen, the band has since expanded to include members Luke Duross and Michael Laing. The group released their debut album, "Before Then Was Now" in the summer 2013, and have received acclaim from websites such as Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Indie Music Filter and Exclaim.

Beginners Guide to Endings (Kingston)
If you ask frontman Chris Koster about success, he'll probably jest ''Between Paul McCartney and us, we've sold over one hundred million records.'' But the truth is, BGTE has been quietly forming an argument as Canada's dirty rock secret.
Along with bassist Keith Cahill and drummer Curtis Weekes, Koster can be found igniting crowds in dark venues around Ontario. The band are recruiting fans at every show with their plug-in-and-go 70's style. The first single from their debut album ''Meaningful'', the late-night anthem ''Everybody's Got Something to Hide'', reached #2 on CBC Radio 3.

Yes Nice (Vancouver/Edmonton)
Yes Nice is the recording and touring collaboration of musicians Scott McKellar and Nathaniel Wong. Writing and recording together for over ten years has spawned the release of three full-length albums including their latest, Warm Gun (2013). With their combined backgrounds in recording engineering, songwriting, orchestral composition and contemporary art, the duo produces a sonic depth rarely achieved in the independent Canadian music scene. Their writing explores themes of ecology, capitalist waste, Christian existentialism and debt culture, in genres best described as post-rock, post-pop, meta-modernist and archivist.

Paradise Animals (Toronto)
Paradise Animals deliver a slippery electronic groove, that shines along to primetime Miami-era keyboards, tight baselines, and smooth, dark vocals. Paradise Animals is the ongoing musical project of songwriter and producer Mark Andrade. With the help of longtime friends and multi-instrumentalists Gary Pereira and Kerri Silva, the band has been busy getting ready to release new music in the fall of 2014.

Bliss Club (Vancouver)
Bliss Club is two people riding bikes through east Vancouver and casting spells. Bliss Club is floating on an ocean mattress or collecting space dust in a paper bag. Electronic pop songs through a dark crystal. Bliss Club is Ian and Sarah writing songs in an apartment surrounded by rain clouds.

Ocean City Defender (Thunder Bay)
Ocean City Defender is the performing name of Ontario-based multi-instrumentalist Kenneth Preston Merkley. Far from the typical sounds of a solo-performer, Ocean City Defender creates lush synthpop songs both on stage and on record. They have been compared to and influenced by bands such as M83, Passion Pit, New Order, and Tears for Fears. Music by Ocean City Defender has been featured in TV shows on NBC, MTV, the CW, and more.
They have showcased at NXNE, toured Ontario, and provided support for fellow Canadian acts such as The Acorn, Wintersleep, The Most Serene Republic, and Ohbijou.

Pat LePoidevin (Princeton B.C.)
Born in a sleepy mountain town in British Columbia with character created in equal parts by Scotland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and the Yukon, Pat LePoidevin is a songwriter strongly influenced by community. With an extensive songwriting resume and four albums to his name, LePoidevin has cultivated a sizable fan base with relentless touring and standout performances at some of Canada's most prestigious music festivals, including the Dawson City Music Festival and SappyFest. On stage, LePoidevin is like a warm light filtering through cold windows onto the frozen streets below. His powerful, melodic vocals bring life to his songs. With friends and fans across the country, LePoidevin is at home wherever he is playing.

Dear Criminals (Montreal)
Dear Criminals is Charles Lavoie, Vincent Legault and Frannie Holder's side project. Having expressed their will to play together for years, they finally decided to unite efforts on this project where Charles' intense vocals and Frannie's vulnerable and fragile voice complement each other in a very unique and touching way. This vocal mixture is blended in a textured soundscape created by Vincent's arrangements and wisely chosen instrumentation, creating a musical tone deeply inspired by Cat Power, Timber Timbre and James Blake.

Mark Martyre (Toronto)
Mark Martyre is a Canadian writer and musician. In November 2013 he released "London" - his highly anticipated follow-up album to "Down, Record" (2012) which received critical acclaim, and garnered attention nationally and internationally. Floorshime Zipper Boots called him a "a troubadour for a new age", and well-known songwriters like Peter Katz have admired his lyrics. In concert, Mark combines his music with poems and stories, creating a unique live experience that captivates his audiences. Mark was nominated by NOW Magazine as one of Toronto's Best Songwriters in 2013.
